On October 1, 2026, the first meeting of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan of the eighth convocation was held in Makhachkala.

The session was attended by the Acting Head of the Republic of Dagestan Fyodor Shchukin, Senator of the Russian Federation Ilyas Umakhanov, Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Dagestan Magomed Ramazanov, representatives of religious associations of the republic.

With the blessing of Archbishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Derbent, the Makhachkala diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church was represented at the meeting by the secretary of the diocese, priest Pavel Kalikin.

Zaur Askenderov was elected Chairman of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan of the eighth convocation.

Magomed Jafarov was elected first deputy chairman of the People's Assembly, Elena Pavlyuchenko, Marat Saidov and Kamil Davdiev were elected as deputy chairmen.

11 committees and 4 specialized commissions were also formed; Suleiman Kerimov was re-elected as a representative of the People's Assembly in the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
