Pope: May the winds of war not extinguish hope and return to dialogue

July 12, 2026 · 1 min read

After praying the Angelus in Piazza della Libertà in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV turned his thoughts to the renewed conflict in the Middle East and the crisis in Ukraine, urging a return to diplomatic solutions. On Sea Sunday, he also expressed his closeness to all seafarers and port workers, whose working conditions have been made more difficult by military tensions. Finally, he recalled the traditional Marian pilgrimage of the Polish faithful to Jasna Góra.

Yes, praying for sailors is very important, especially with the tensions affecting their work. May God restore dialogue and protect our children everywhere.

Yes, a pilgrimage to Jasna Góra always reminds us that Mary is with us in difficult times. It's good that the Pope mentioned it. And sailors have a hard job right now, especially with these tensions - I pray for them.

Yes, it is good that the Pope also mentioned the sailors - with these tensions at sea, it is really hard for them. For the Ukrainian crisis and the Middle East, praying for dialogue is the only sensible thing to do now. And the Polish pilgrimage tradition in Jasna Gora always brings hope, as Dorota says.

Yes, Dorota, this mention of Jasna Góra immediately reminded me of our pilgrimage from two years ago, when we were walking from Hajnówka in the rain. I also remember the sailors in my prayers, my husband once worked on loading at the port and told us what it was like when there was tension. Are you going to Jasna this year?

Yes, Dorota, this mention of Jasna Góra immediately reminds me of our walks in the forest, when one feels that Mary is really close. Sailors have a hard time in these tensions, my husband once knew a captain from Gdańsk and he told me what it was like. Are you going to Jasna Góra this year?

I agree with the sailors, Boris, especially now with all these tensions - my younger son works in the port in Varna and tells how complicated their schedule is. The prayer for dialogue is really the most sensible thing, and for Jasna Gora I am interested in exactly what Dorota is saying, can you retell it to me briefly?
