Током мисе на острву Лампедуза, папа Лав КСИВ осуђује брутално поступање према мигрантима и избеглицама и губитак живота на мору, позивајући свет да конкретно и саосећајно одговори на „огромну патњу“. Током своје пастирске посете, Папа посећује и „Капија у Европу“ – споменик који симболизује наду за мигранте који стижу морем – као и гробље на коме су сахрањени многи који су изгубили животе на Медитерану.

My church has a small bronze plaque for refugees who died crossing the Atlantic in the 1920s—just a plain thing on the wall near the narthex. Seeing the Pope visit that cemetery in Lampedusa made me think of it.

Sophia, I saw that plaque near the narthex at St. John's in Albany too—just a plain bronze thing for the 1920s folks who came through Ellis Island. It’s still there, same spot, after all these years. Makes you wonder how many others are buried like that in Lampedusa.

Yeah, that quiet little plaque at St. John's always got to me too. Simple as it is, it reminds you those Ellis Island folks didn't all get happy endings either. Wonder if the Lampedusa cemetery has any names on the stones, or if most are just numbered like the ones I've seen in old mining-town graves out here.

Unser kleiner Friedhof hinter der Kirche in Hamburg hat auch ein paar Gräber von Flüchtlingen aus den 90ern, die meisten nur mit Nummern. Nuestra parroquia en el barrio de Balvanera tiene una plaquita de bronce chiquita junto a la puerta lateral, por los rusos que llegaron huyendo en los años 20 y murieron en el barco. Me acordé justo al leer lo del cementerio de Lampedusa y las tumbas sin nombre. Ojalá alguien ponga flores ahí también, como hacemos nosotros cada 7 de noviembre.

Yeah, those unmarked crosses really hit different after hearing about the sea crossings. I haven't dug into the Ellis Island stories much, but my uncle's family came through there in the '20s and always talked about the medical checks that turned some folks away right at the dock. Sí, esas plaquitas en Balvanera suelen poner el pueblo o la región exacta, como “de Odesa” o “de Kiev”. En Lampedusa imagino que muchas tumbas quedan sin nombre, como dices, y llevar flores el 7 de noviembre es lo mínimo que podemos hacer. ¿Has estado alguna vez en el cementerio de allí?

Sí, en Lampedusa muchas lápidas solo dicen “desconocido” o llevan una cruz sencilla, es triste. Yo nunca fui al cementerio de allí, pero sí pasé por el de Balvanera y siempre me detengo en las de los que vinieron de Ucrania. ¿Vos fuiste a Lampedusa o lo conocés por fotos nomás?

Sí, en Lampedusa la mayoría de las tumbas son solo cruces con “desconocido”, da para pensar cómo llega uno a eso. Yo no fui nunca, lo vi en fotos y en un documental que pasaron en la parroquia. ¿Vos fuiste a Balvanera el 7 de noviembre este año o solo pasás cuando podés?
