Patriarch Theodore II marks 22 Years on the Patriarchal Throne of Alexandria

Today, Friday, October 9, 2026, marks the 22nd anniversary of the election of Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa to the Apostolic and Patriarchal Throne of St. Mark.
On October 9, 2004, Metropolitan Petros of Axum, then Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, announced the unanimous election of Theodore II as the new Primate of the Church of Alexandria at the Church of St. Sabbas in Alexandria.
Twenty-two years later, the Patriarchate is commemorating this significant anniversary with liturgical celebrations and the participation of hierarchs from various ecclesiastical provinces across Africa.
The celebrations began on Thursday evening, October 8, with Great Patriarchal Vespers at the Holy Monastery of St. Sabbas the Sanctified in Alexandria. A Patriarchal Divine Liturgy is scheduled for Friday, October 9, at 9:00 a.m., marking the anniversary of the Patriarch’s election.
