Patriarch of Serbia in Ljubljana: We are called to become one in Christ

More than 1,000 faithful gathered in Ljubljana on Sunday, September 13, for the 90th anniversary of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, with Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia presiding over the Divine Liturgy.

The church, its courtyard and surrounding streets were filled with faithful for the anniversary, which marks 90 years since the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the site.

“Today a great blessing has been poured out upon this holy place, upon this church and this city,” Patriarch Porfirije said, adding that the faithful had gathered to celebrate “90 years since the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated here to the glory of God.”

In his homily, the Serbian Patriarch referred to Saints Cyril and Methodius and their missionary work among the Slavic peoples, stressing that their message transcended national and linguistic boundaries.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading, Patriarch Porfirije also focused on Christ’s commandment of love.

“Love the Lord your God with your entire being — mind, heart, body, with everything you are — and then love your neighbor as yourself. And that is the only thing necessary,” he said.
