Patriarch of Romania at Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada Congress

Patriarch Daniel of Romania delivered a message on Saturday to the Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada, which took place in Montreal from July 3 to 5, emphasizing the vital role of women in the Church and society and reaffirming the importance of strengthening the Christian family.

Addressing the participants, the Patriarch noted that contemporary society presents numerous challenges to the institution of the family, making the Church’s pastoral mission more important than ever.

“We live in a time when the institution of the family faces multiple challenges, and the role of women in the Church and society requires deeper understanding and appreciation,” Patriarch Daniel said. “The Christian woman is a model of faith, self-sacrificial love, and piety.”

The Romanian Patriarch stressed that the Church has a responsibility to support and strengthen Christian families by providing pastoral guidance and spiritual assistance throughout all stages of family life. He underscored the importance of preserving Christian values and nurturing faith within the home, which he described as the foundation of both Church and society.

Well said by the Patriarch. I especially liked that it emphasized the role of women as role models of faith and self-sacrifice, which is exactly what I see in my wife and our two daughters every day. The family is really the foundation, without it the church will hardly stand.

I agree with the Patriarch that family is the foundation. Here in St. Petersburg, too, you can see how without a strong wife and mother, everything in the parish is unsteady. My late mother was exactly like that - she passed on the faith to her children and drew everyone to church, without loud words.

In our parish in Craiova, I see exactly this in the wives who take the children to catechesis and keep the order at home, even when the men are away at work. I agree with Patriarch Danilo, that's exactly how things are here in Niš - women run both the house and the church, like my late wife who taught the children to pray and dragged us to the liturgy without saying much. Pastoral help is really needed by the family, especially now when everyone is at work or on the phone.
