Patriarch of Antioch sends condolences following deadly attack on Church in Karak

October 26, 2026 · 1 min read

Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East has sent a message of condolence to Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem following the martyrdom of the faithful in the church in Karak.

In his message, the Patriarch stated:

“It was with profound sorrow and grief that I received the news of the tragic incident at the church in Karak. We unite our prayers with yours, beseeching Christ our God to have mercy on this suffering East.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch and All the East, both in its historic homeland and throughout the diaspora, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you and to our brothers in the Church of Jerusalem.

I pray that the Almighty Lord will enfold the martyrs of this heinous attack in His mercy, grant divine consolation to their bereaved families, and bestow healing upon the injured.”

This attack in Karak is sad. Above all, I remember that Patriarch John X speaks of the martyrs and prays for the bereaved families and the injured. Let us pray for them this Sunday at the parish.

Yes, this attack in Karak is really sad. I also remember that Patriarch John X clearly speaks of martyrs, that struck me. Sunday at the parish we will pray for the families and the injured, as you say.

Yes, the use of the word “martyrs” also struck me, it’s direct and it says something powerful. At the bakery this morning several customers were still talking about it. On Sunday we will pray together for families, as you suggest.

Yes, this word “martyrs” struck me too, it is precise and straightforward. At Sunday Mass, I will think particularly of the bereaved families during universal prayer. You are right, we will pray together for them.

Yes, this word “martyrs” is really strong and fair, it reminds us that their death is not only a tragedy but a testimony. I will also note the families in my prayer this Sunday, especially thinking of those who remained without fathers or sons at home. Which parish do you go to mass?

Yes, this word “martyrs” really gives weight to the event. This morning on the Promenade des Anglais I met a lady from the parish who was also talking about it, it affects everyone. We will pray for the injured as well as the families, they really need it.

Yes, this word “martyrs” changes everything, it reminds us that their death is not in vain. The lady you met on the Promenade des Anglais is right, things are shaking even here in Marseille. We will also pray for the injured this Sunday at the parish, they will need strength to recover.
