Good to see Father Andrey talking with the older pupils about real values ahead of Unity Day – 18 lads and lasses is a decent turnout for a small village school. Father Sergiy’s words at the Chernavchitsy parents’ meeting hit the mark too; education without proper upbringing is only half the job. Nice that both priests are quietly getting on with it.

Thank God, Father Andrej arrived to talk to the eighth and eleventh graders right before the Day of National Unity. In our school in Tomašovka, it has always been important that children hear about the values that hold the family and the nation together. Father Sergije also nicely reminded parents in Černavčice that education is no less important than grades - congratulations, we need more such meetings.

Father Andrey's talk with the 8th and 11th graders in Tomashovka sounds practical—those kids are exactly the age when they start thinking about what really holds a country together. Glad Father Sergiy reminded the parents in Chernavchitsy that upbringing matters as much as grades; too many forget that part until it's late. Nice turnout of 18 too for a village school.

Father Andrey’s talk on spiritual values with those 8th and 11th graders right before Unity Day makes sense — that’s exactly when kids start asking bigger questions. Good to see Father Sergiy pressing the same point at the Chernavchitsy parents’ meeting; schooling without upbringing really is only half the job.

And we in the church choir last week talked with some mothers about the same thing: that at the age of 14-17 children listen more to what you tell them about values than to math grades. I'm glad that Father Andrei arrived at Tomashovka just before the Unity Day, with 18 students, which is no small feat.

I agree with you about the ages—my son was that exact age when he started asking real questions about values after school talks. The 18 kids showing up in a small place like Tomashovka is actually a solid number; our parish events here in the Bay Area often draw fewer on a weekday. Did Father Andrey mention any specific story or example that stuck with the students?

Father Andrei in Tomashovka got it right: it is in grades 8-11 that children begin to think about what really keeps people together. In Yekaterinburg, too, priests go to schools before such holidays, and you can always see how the parents thank them afterwards. Father Sergius said correctly about education; without it, no grades will help.

Father Andrei spoke with the 8th and 11th grade students precisely before the Unity Day. At 13-17 years old, they start thinking about such topics, as you said, Michael. In our school here in Larissa, they had invited a priest for a similar conversation, and the parents said that he helped more than the lessons.

Father Andrey picking the Day of National Unity as the hook makes sense—those teens are right at the point where they start weighing what “unity” actually looks like beyond slogans. The 18 kids turnout is decent for a village school on a weekday; our quilting circle here in New York sometimes pulls fewer when the weather turns. Did Father Sergiy mention any specific examples of “upbringing” that stuck with the parents?
