Nuns and holy icons evacuated from monastery on Paros as wildfire approaches
Nuns were safely evacuated from the Holy Monastery of Agioi Theodoroi on the Greek island of Paros after a major wildfire burning in the Trypiti area approached the monastery.
According to protothema.gr , the flames came close to the monastery, prompting the immediate mobilisation of police and firefighting forces to carry out the precautionary evacuation of the nuns.
Sacred icons were also removed from the monastery in order to protect them from the advancing fire.
A major firefighting operation is under way on Paros, involving 45 firefighters, two teams of firefighters operating on foot and ten vehicles. Greek Police officers are also assisting with the safe evacuation of residents from areas threatened by the blaze.
Firefighting forces continue their efforts to bring the flames under control, as the wildfire in the Trypiti area remains active.
