Ninth Sunday of Matthew: Matthew 14:22–34

The Gospel reading for the Ninth Sunday of Matthew reveals Christ as Lord of creation and Savior of humankind. The event follows the multiplication of the five loaves, a sign of divine care. Immediately afterward, Jesus compels His disciples to get into the boat and cross to the other side. The word “compelled” shows that their journey through the night and the storm is not accidental; it takes place within the plan of divine instruction.

Christ goes up the mountain “by Himself to pray.” This image reveals the human life of the Lord, who prays, but also teaches that every work of love must be founded upon communion with the Father. The disciples, on the other hand, are in the boat, far from the land, “tormented by the waves.” The boat may be seen as an image of the Church, which journeys through history facing winds, persecutions, temptations, and fears. Yet she is not abandoned. Christ appears to be absent, but in truth He is present and appears at the moment when man has reached his limits.
