Fire in Porto Germeno: Autopsy in the ancient fortress, in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Aegosthenestranslated

The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, yesterday afternoon, carried out an autopsy in the area of Porto Germenos, in order to determine the effects on the ancient fortress, the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Aigosthenes, from the great fire that occurred on July 31, 2026 and affected the area for twenty-four hours. Due to the extensive deforestation, carried out systematically by the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Western Attica, the monuments were not particularly affected by the fire.

In the fortress of Aegosthenes, no major damage was caused to the walls and the restored towers (SE and NE), as well as to the churches inside the Acropolis. However, immediate cleaning of their mural decoration is required. In the northern part of the fortress, the fire caused damage to existing stone blocks, which were planned to be used in the upcoming restoration works.

Damage was caused to the modern infrastructure of the area. The wooden support beams of the scaffolding wall installed in the NE were destroyed, affecting the scaffolding, the crane bridge and the scaffolding that remained stored in a construction site…

Too bad about the wooden beams on the scaffolding, it will probably have to be built again. At least the walls and towers lasted thanks to that regular cleaning of the grass. When the minister is around again, one might ask how quickly they will fix the frescoes.
