Two Years Since the Tragedy of Novi Sad – Commemoration for the 16 Victims by the Patriarch of Serbiatranslated

November 1, 2026 · 1 min read

Today, November 1, 2026, marks two years since the tragic accident at the Novi Sad railway station, when 16 people lost their lives on November 1, 2024 due to the collapse of the steel roof. On Sunday morning, His Beatitude Patriarch Porphyry of Serbia, after the High Priest Divine Liturgy, commemorated the victims of the railway accident at the Hierarchical Church of Saint Sava in Bratsar.

In his sermon on this Gospel reading about the rich man and Lazarus, the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church emphasized that what makes us human, what qualifies us as images of God, is our faith in God and our love for God, which can only be manifested, confirmed, and revealed through love for our neighbor.

And today, His Holiness continued, "precisely out of love for God and faith in Him, faith in His providence and care for every soul in the context of eternity, we prayed for the victims beneath the fallen roof of Novi Sad exactly two years ago. We prayed for their repose, knowing that the pain is great."
