The Archbishop is right — after 35 centuries you don’t just walk away from your rights on the island. It’s not maximalism to say you want to stay on the land your people have lived on that long. I hope the meeting with the President leads to something realistic instead of another bad compromise.

The Archbishop makes a fair point about those 35 centuries. Still, I keep thinking about the families who actually live there now and what a workable peace would look like for their daily lives, not just the history. Do you think a realistic deal has to include some give on both sides, or is that asking too much?

The Archbishop is spot on about not calling it maximalism when you’re just asking to stay where your people have been for that long. I wonder though if the “realistic” part the President’s team is chasing will actually hold up once the details get hammered out. Have you followed how these talks usually end up watering things down?

I get what you mean about the families living there now – my own grandparents left Cyprus in the 60s and still talk about how the daily fear never really left. But the Archbishop isn’t rejecting compromise; he’s saying any deal has to let Greek Cypriots stay on their land without turning them into a permanent minority under Ankara’s control. What kind of “give” do you think wouldn’t just repeat the mistakes of the Annan plan?

I see your point about the families living there now – my son’s friend from Nicosia still has relatives split between the two sides, and the daily hassle of crossing checkpoints wears on them. A realistic deal does need some give, but only if it doesn’t force Greek Cypriots into second-class status on their own island. What kind of practical safeguards do you think would actually make daily life workable long-term?

I agree with you on the checkpoints wearing families down—my fishing buddy's cousin crosses at Ledra Street every month just to visit his mother. Practical safeguards would need to include real veto power on security matters and guaranteed property rights that don't get overturned later. What do you think about keeping a small Greek Cypriot police presence in mixed areas?
