A new miracle of the Lord is presented in the Gospel of the 8th Sunday of Matthew: the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, without women and children, as the Evangelist characteristically emphasizes (Matthew, 14-22). The same miracle is presented by the other Evangelists, a fact which, as we have emphasized elsewhere, demonstrates the unity of the Gospel, through its diversity, since each Evangelist illuminates the whole event in his own way.

As soon as the Lord was informed about the beheading of John the Forerunner, "he departed in a ship to a desert place by himself and the crowds followed him on foot from the cities." (Matt., n' 13). According to His custom, the Lord retires to pray after a tiring day, so that He can rest and regroup His forces and that people have time to digest the best lessons of the day. In this particular case, there is a special reason: the death of the Forerunner, who had so zealously announced the coming of His kingdom, "forces" him to withdraw himself.
