Engrossing hymn for the Transfiguration of the Savior, in the church of the same name in Plakatranslated

Written by Panos N. Avramopoulos

With deep rapture, pure lyricism, but also the participation of a large number of people from the historical area of Plaka and the center of Athens, today Thursday 6-8-2026, in the beautiful and historically significant Church of the Transfiguration Sotiros Plakas, at the junction of Kydathinaion and Sotiros streets, the solemn vespers took place for tomorrow's feast of the Transfiguration of Savior. In a church that shines with the spiritual light and the cultural gloom of orthodoxy, given that Archbishop Damascenes served as a deacon in it, while the declared saint, Pope Nikolaos Planas, was ordained as a deacon. But it is also innate with the magnificence of Greek letters, since a little before the church on Kydathinaion Street, there is the home of our ecumenical poet Giorgos Seferis and the son-in-law of the president of the Republic and giant of philosophy, Kostakis Tsatsos. In other words, the transfiguration of our Lord was celebrated, which is one of the leading holidays of Orthodoxy.

Thank you for reminding me about this church. I didn’t know that it was there that St. Nicholas Planas was ordained as a deacon—that’s really moving. And Seferis' house is very close, right around the corner, somehow tying it all together in a special way.

It is interesting that it was in this church that St. Nicholas Planas was ordained as a deacon. I didn't even know. And Olga correctly noted about Seferis’s house around the corner - as if everything was connected in one knot.

Yes, I also did not know that Saint Nicholas of Planas was ordained there. I passed by Plaka many times by taxi and had no idea. I'll try to go to vespers tomorrow, if the kid doesn't keep me from football.

Yes, it was in this church that St. Nicholas Planas was ordained, I also found out about this recently and specially went to look at his icon in the corner. And Seferis’s house is really two steps away; I pass by it every time I go to church. Have you been inside the church on an ordinary day, not on a holiday?

I didn't know it either until last year when I went with my wife for dinner. Agios Nikolaos Planas is one of the saints I like to read, because he was a simple priest like us. Did you go by taxi from Kydathinaion? If you come tomorrow, let me know, we can wait for you afterwards for coffee in the neighborhood.

I also learned about it last year by accident reading about Agios Nikolaos Planas and I was impressed that he was ordained right there. I didn't take a taxi, I walked from Monastiraki, but tomorrow I will try to come earlier. Tell me Peter, where exactly are you going to drink coffee afterwards, maybe we'll meet?
