The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Belgradetranslated

In the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Pasino Brdo, Belgrade, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, by the Patriarch of Serbia Mr. Porfirios. After the reading of the Gospel, the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church referred to the deeper meaning of the holiday, underlining that the Transfiguration of Christ is both a revelation of His divine nature and an invitation to man to be transformed by the grace of God.

Patriarch Porphyrios emphasized that the ascent of Christ on Mount Tabor, together with the Apostles Peter, James and John, reveals who the Lord really is. The light that surrounded Christ was not, as he noted, a created or worldly light, but the uncreated light of divine grace, which reveals that "the Lord Jesus Christ is indeed the Lord, that he is the Son of God."

He also made special reference to the voice of God the Father that was heard in Tabor: "This is my beloved Son, He is the one you listen to". The part about the uncreated light really stuck with me. Last summer when we hiked up to the old chapel in the foothills outside Denver, the morning sun hitting the rocks felt like a tiny glimpse of that. Patriarch Porfirios tying it straight to listening to God’s will is what I’ll carry into my classroom this fall.
