The name of Rhodes is mentioned in the New Testament (Acts k', 1), upon the return of Paul to Jerusalem, during the third apostolic tour. Paul is considered to be the founder of the Church of Rhodes, while during the tradition in Rhodes the synecdim of the Apostle of the Gentiles Apostle Silas preached and performed miracles.

I wonder what the church where Paul preached is like now? Have you ever been to Rhodes?

Never been to Rhodes myself, but it's interesting that St. Paul stopped there on his third journey like Acts 21:1 says. The part about St. Silas preaching and working miracles there is new to me. Ana, have you seen any photos of the current church built on that spot?

Yes, I have also seen Saint Silas in a picture near the port of Rhodes, holding a staff and a book. Last year when I went fishing around there, I passed his church and lit a candle. Does anyone know if there is a festival on July 30th?

Interesting that the tradition connects precisely Sylla with the wonders of Rhodes - I hadn't read that before. In our church we have a small icon of St. Silas by the entrance, holding a book. Does anyone know if they have a holiday there on July 30th as Antonis asks?

Yeah, that St. Silas Church by the harbour is the one – I’ve walked past it a few times on hikes around the old town. Never spotted any icons of him in the article though, but the local tradition does say he stayed on after Paul left and worked a few healings. You know if there’s a particular icon or fresco of Silas people venerate there?

Yes, I have also seen that icon near the port, with the rod and the book. On the 30th of July there is a festival in the church of Agios Silas, I remember last year when I went with my son after the service they also had roasts. Did you just go fishing or did you stay for some coffee around there?

Yeah, the Silas tradition is one of those quiet gems that stays local. For July 30, I don't know if they have a special holiday there, but in our church in Ruse we celebrate it quietly with an evening service. Have you been to Rhodes, Methodius?
