Saint Neomartys Dimitrios of Samarin The thousands of New Martyrs in the dark years of Turkish rule were also National Martyrs, because for the Greek Orthodox, faith and Homeland are inseparable. They were martyred for the holy faith of Christ and the freedom of the country. One of the most heroic New Martyrs and National Martyrs was the holy New Martyr Dimitrios from Samarina.
He was born around the end of the 18th century in the mountainous villages of Samarina, Grevena, where the slavery of the tyrant Ottomans was somewhat limited, due to the inaccessibility of the lands. That is why the idea of revolution and liberation from the inhumane Turkish slavery had particularly developed in those places and revolutionary movements had developed.
We don't know much about his background and childhood. Everything we know we owe to the French consul in Ioannina, traveler and philhellene François Pouqueville...
