September 27, 1831: The assassination of Ioannis Kapodistriastranslated

Ioannis Kapodistrias was a Greek politician and diplomat. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia and the first Governor of the independent Greek State, which he founded from the ground up and with his personal wealth. He was born in Corfu on February 11, 1776 during the period of the Venetian occupation. His father Antonios – Maria came from a noble family, as one of his ancestors had received the title of Count from the Duke of Savoy Charles Emmanuel II. The title was entered in the "Golden Book" (Libro d'Oro) of the nobles of Corfu in 1679 and traces its origin to Cape Istria in the Adriatic, today's Koper in Slovenia. The family of his mother Diamantina (Adamantias) Gonemis was also registered in the "Golden Book" from 1606.

The young John studied medicine, philosophy and law at the University of Patavia (Padua) in Italy. In 1797 he settled in his hometown of Corfu and practiced the profession of physician-surgeon. Two years later, when Russia and Turkey briefly occupied the Ionian Islands, he was entrusted with the command of the military hospital.
