At the celebration of the Holy Monastery of Agioi Anargyro Agia Larisis Ieronymostranslated

July 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The Reverend Metropolitan of Larissa and Tyrnavos, Mr. Ieronymos, went to the destroyed Holy Monastery of Agioi Anargyros of Agia to celebrate the Solemn Vespers, following the permission and blessing of the local Pastor, the Reverend Metropolitan Demetrias and Almyros, Mr. Ignatiou. The Holy Monastery, which now exists as the Chapel of Agia, was completely destroyed during the Italian occupation by the Fascist forces, while only fragments of the old catholicon remain, on which the new Holy Church has been erected, with the care of the residents of Agia and the care of the Bishop. Protopresbyter Fr. Athanasios, High Priest Commissioner of Agia. A few meters beyond the Holy Monastery, two hermitages dug into the rock are preserved, one painted with old hagiographies, and one not, access to which, however, has been abolished after the Daniel disaster, so due to landslides, the paths and entrances to the hermitages were blocked. Crowds of people came to celebrate and honor the memory of Saints Anargyro, in a place where it is very beloved, not only for its coolness but also for the various spiritual events that are organized there, as well as for its historicity...

I see that the stone cells in the rock are now inaccessible due to landslides. Maybe someday they will open again?

Yes, after Daniel, everything there was covered with stones and earth, the paths are now dangerous. Locals say that they will not clear it soon - there is not enough money and strength. Have you been there before, in the cells themselves?

Yes, after Daniel everything got crowded, the paths became dangerous. Pity about the old rock cells, especially the one with the ancient frescoes - I remember it from a time, it was so quiet and cool there. Hopefully the locals will still find the strength to clean up one day.

Yes, after Daniel everything really fell asleep there, the trails are now impossible to pass. I was in those cells even before the flood, in the one with the frescoes, it’s very touching to look at the old images right on the rock. Have the locals already begun to sort out the rubble along the lower path, or are they just talking?

Yes, after Daniel everything was blocked there, I also heard from friends from Agia that the paths have not yet been cleared. There is truly a special silence in that cell with the frescoes, right on the rock. Did you go there often before the flood?
