Sunday Discipline – Five loaves for five thousandtranslated

July 25, 2026 · 1 min read

Man needs not only spiritual but also material food to live. Christ takes care of both, at the same time verifying what he commanded at another time, namely that people should ask for the Kingdom of God and all other needs of people will be fulfilled. In this case, the listeners, who followed him into the desert to learn from him, did not have to take care of their own food, but the merciful teacher caught up with them, multiplying the five loaves and the two fishes, so that everyone would be satisfied and have some left over, explains Apostle Nikolaidis, Brother Professor of Theology at EKPA & President of the Institute Agios Maximos the Greek.

That miracle with the five loaves and two fish always gets me—Jesus saw the crowd was hungry before they even asked and took care of it. The professor's point about not worrying so much because we're told to seek the Kingdom first rings true; I try to remember that when I'm stressing over groceries or the kids' schedules. Simple but hard to live out.

Yes, I loved how the teacher explained that Christ thought of their food before anyone asked. Just like in life, sometimes we run after supplies and He took them before us. When I read this, I think of the days when I went for a walk with my daughter in the forest near Chisinau and shared what I had in my bag - as if it multiplied even then.
