Lina Mendoni in Amorgos: Cultural renaissance with restoration projects in Temples and a new Museumtranslated

The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni inaugurated the "Tholo" and "Kato Lakko" restored by the Municipality of Amorgos in the Castle of Chora, as part of the reconstruction of the traditional Byzantine settlement. Almost in the center of the island, the Castle, the high natural rock with the all-white church of Ai George, which dominates the town, is the symbol of Chora.
Its residential core, on the north and east side of the Castle, dates back to the early Byzantine period, when the Arab raids forced the inhabitants of almost all the Aegean islands to move their coastal settlements inland. The natural rock seems to have been fortified during the years of the Venetian occupation (1206-1537). Among the few architectural remains of the Venetian period are the "Kato Lakkos" and the vaulted arched water tank of the 15th century, in Voreina. The cistern was given to the public, as a visitable monument, after it was restored by the Municipality of Amorgos, in the context of the excellent cooperation it has with the Ministry of Culture.
