✤ The French Martyr Saint Victor of Marseille (third century AD) ✤

Victor was born into a noble family of Marseille during the third century AD. He worked in the weapon craft. He served the emperor with courage and loyalty. But when Maximian visited Marseille (around the year 288 AD), at the beginning of the time of persecution of Christians, Victor did not want to hide his faith and began to encourage his Christian comrades-in-arms not to fear those who kill the body in order to be considered worthy of heavenly rewards. Day and night, he moved from house to house urging believers to the battle of faith and accompanying the martyrs to the places of their torture. He, too, was stopped and woke up, bound in chains, before the Emperor. While he remained unshakable in the face of the tyrant’s threats and deceptive promises, he shamed the arrogance of idolatry, proclaiming Christ as the only true God. The Emperor dragged him through the streets and handed him over to the beatings and insults of the people...

Интересно, как Виктор из благородной семьи, служивший в армии, вдруг начал ходить по домам и укреплять христиан перед казнями. Не побоялся даже перед самим Максимианом стоять. У нас в церкви на иконах такие святые всегда с мечом, теперь понимаю почему.
