Near the Martyriki city of Kalavryta and at an altitude of 940 meters, in a steep rocky landscape of unique natural beauty, stands the Holy Monastery of Megalo Spileio, one of the oldest and most important Orthodox Pilgrimages.

The tradition, as recorded in the Foundation of the Monastery by Konstantinos Oikonomos of Oikonomos, places its foundation in the 4th century, highlighting its long-standing presence and spiritual radiance throughout the centuries. The establishment of an organized Monastery is considered to have taken place in the 13th century, as evidenced by a chrysobull of the Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, as well as archaeological evidence, such as the marble floor of the Church and a marble relief breastplate, which date back to the end of the 13th century.
