September 29: Saint Kyriakos the departed is celebratedtranslated

Saint Kyriakos the departed, whom the Church celebrates today, came from bustling Corinth and lived in the time of the Byzantine emperor Theodosius the Younger. His father was a priest. At the age of 18 he visited Jerusalem as a pilgrim. There he heard people talking admiringly about the great ascetic Agios Euthymios and asked to meet him. After having the blessing to visit him and converse with him, at Euthymius' prompting he met another famous monk, Gerasimos, who was ascetic near the Jordan desert. There, with prayer, humility and penance, and certainly with obedience and cutting off personal will, he reached heights of great virtuous life and holiness.

At the age of 40 he was ordained an elder. While, at the age of 77, he again left for the desert for more intense spiritual struggles. He strengthened the orthodox opinion of many believers, protecting them from bad beliefs and heresies. Saint Kyriakos fell asleep at the age of 109.
