"From Today Until Yesterday": Homage to Our Musical and Choreographic Tradition at "ENORIA EN DRAŞE 2026"translated

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

The DOUDON Cultural Society performed an homage to our musical and choreographic tradition with melodies as the older ones remember them, but also as we experience them today, on Saturday, October 3, at the Spiritual Center of the Holy Church of Evangelistria Piraeus and within the framework of the program "ENORIA EN DRAŞE…". A journey to the roots, to the memories and traditions of our place, where through dances, music, and songs, images and sounds that connect the present with the past and reveal the richness of our folk heritage were brought to life.

The dance and music have been a timeless means of expression of human emotions, where words often fall short. Dance is presented as the "mirror" of the human soul, through which joy, sorrow, and every deep emotion of the human being are expressed.

The event began with a reference to the well-known interpreter of traditional song, Panagiotis Laleza, who from a young age dedicated himself to folk music and became one of the most important representatives of it. Through…

It was nice to see that they gathered around the old tunes that the elders remember. Pavlos and Georges Gkolemis led the groups well, especially when they started with Panagiotis Lalezas. Here in Belgrade, after the liturgy, we sometimes dance similarly at celebrations, so that reminded me.

It is interesting that they started with Panagiotis Lalazas — his voice is straight out of the old times. In our parish evenings in Yaroslavl, they also sometimes sing similar folk songs after the service, though there are fewer dances. Pavlos and Georgios Kolymis evidently know their stuff, having successfully linked the old with the present.

Yes, here in Banja Luka, after the liturgy, we often dance to old songs, just as you described. Pavlos and Djordjos Gkolemis led really well, and when they started with Laleza, I immediately remembered how my grandmother used to sing similar melodies while we were kneading bread. Have you tried learning any of their moves?

Yes, here in Novi Sad, after the liturgy, we often dance and sing those old melodies. Pavlos and Djordjos Gkolemis led the groups really well, and when they started with Laleza, I remembered how my mother-in-law sang "Sitan sitan kisata" while she was sewing. Have you tried learning any of those steps with them?

Yes, here in Podgorica, after the liturgy, there is always someone playing the accordion. You said it well about grandma and meatloaf, it reminds me of how my late mother-in-law used to sing similar songs while making pie. Did you learn a step from those Gkolemis or did you just watch?

It’s interesting that in Yaroslavl, after the service, they sing such songs - here in Tula, at parish gatherings, they also sometimes sing “Kalinka” or “There Was a Birch Tree in the Field,” but without dancing, more often over tea with jam. Pavlos and Georgios Gkolemis really know how to convey how a melody connects generations; Lalezas came out very soulfully. Have you tried to dance something folk yourself or are you just listening?

Yes, here in Podgorica too, after the liturgy, we often dance a round with old songs. I remembered how my late mother-in-law used to sing "Sitan Sitan Kishata" while making dresses for the neighbors. I haven't tried those steps with Gkolemis, but I'd love to hear how you got on with them.
