Mareotis Damascene on the 84th anniversary of the Battle of El Alameintranslated

The 84th anniversary of the battle of El Alamein was commemorated on October 17, 2026 at the Monument to the Greek fallen of the historic battle of the Second World War, with the performance of a memorial prayer by the Bishop of Mareotis Mr. Damascenes, the invitation of the heroes and the laying of wreaths in their honor. The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. Athanasios Davakis, accompanied by senior officials of the Hellenic Armed Forces. The Greek YFETHA emphasized, among other things, that the flame of freedom was passed from occupied Greece to the Greek Army of the Middle East - which was also formed by Egyptian volunteers - who fought in El Alamein on the side of the allies.
The Ambassador of Greece to Egypt, Nikolaos Papageorgiou, praised the contribution of the fallen to the victory of the allied forces, but also the high symbolism of their sacrifice for future generations.
The commemoration ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Egyptian Armed Forces and local authorities, representatives of Diplomatic Missions and Defense Attaches, executives and members of the Greek Communities of Cairo and Alexandria, students and teachers of Greek schools, scouts, visitors...
