The international conference entitled: "The cultural foundations of Europe and the 1700 years of Christianity in Georgia" started yesterday, October 2, 2026, in Tbilisi. During the opening ceremony of the conference, among others, His Beatitude Patriarch of Georgia, Mr. Sio C'.

The Christian faith, a fundamental pillar of the Georgian identity In his speech, His Beatitude noted:

"Today's conference, in addition to celebrating a remarkable historical event, is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the long Christian journey of Georgians, this spiritual and state heritage, which shaped the face of our nation and was one of the fundamental pillars of its identity. The decisive choice made by our ancestors 1,700 years ago firmly secured for Georgia the position that befits her among the world's cultures."

The Patriarch Mr. Sio also made extensive reference to the way in which Christianity shaped the face of the Georgian people and of Europe as a whole.

It's interesting how the Patriarch tied Georgia's 1700 years of faith straight to Europe's broader cultural roots. Our own parish choir sang some Georgian hymns last year during a visit from their bishop, and you could really hear that deep, steady Christian backbone in the music. Makes me wonder what specific everyday customs in Georgia still carry that same 4th-century choice.

I think the Patriarch said well that the election 1700 years ago gave Georgia a stable place among the nations. In our parish, I once read about Saint Nina and I thought it was interesting how their faith kept all the people united through so many invasions. Did they also talk about the old monasteries in the mountains at this conference?

Yeah, that direct link the Patriarch drew between Georgia's conversion and Europe's whole cultural shape stood out to me too. Our choir did those Georgian hymns last summer as well— the polyphony hits different, like you can feel the centuries of steady faith baked into every note. What everyday custom from back then do you figure stuck around the most, like in their food blessings or family feasts?

Yes, Gabriela, that election 1700 years ago really kept Georgia going, as you say. At our pharmacy, a lady from Georgia once told me how mountain monasteries, like Gelati or David Gareja, were places where monks kept books and icons even while the hordes were coming. Do you think that at the conference they also talked about the painting there, that I really like their style of painting the saints?

Yes, Gabriela, I also once read about Saint Nina in that old book in the church choir, and it seemed to me that through her faith entered people's homes, not just palaces. At the conference I think they talked about the monasteries in the mountains, because they were like living fortresses. Have you ever seen pictures of David Gareja?

Yes, Gabriela, that election 1700 years ago really put Georgia on the map. A Georgian customer comes to our store and says that Saint Nina first brought the faith to the villages, not to the court, and that's why it caught on with all the people. Have you read anything specific about those mountain monasteries or just heard of them?

The part about the 1700 years shaping both Georgia and the rest of Europe really hit home for me too. Those Georgian hymns your choir sang sound like they carry that same weight; I remember tasting a simple loaf blessed with wine and honey at a Georgian friend's table last year and thinking the same thing, that the old faith is still right there in the everyday meal. What hymn from the set stuck with you the most?
