July 6: Saint Sisoi the Great is celebratedtranslated

July 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Today the Church honors the memory of Saint Sisoi the Great, Hieromartyr Asti, Bishop of Dyrrachium, Martyrs Apostles Philemon, Archippus and Onesimus and Saint New Martyr Cyril of Thessalonica. St. Sisoi has the title of great, like St. Anthony, and because he really was a great ascetic, but also to distinguish himself from two others at the same time, who also had the same name. Saint Sisoi in the prime of his life gave up worldly things and went to the desert of Egypt, where a few years ago Saint Anthony had been an ascetic. He was not only drawn there by the place, but also by the example of Saint Anthony, who tried to imitate him in his virtues.

The first thing that Saint Sisoi took care of was to remain unknown, but the disciples of Saint Anthony, admiring his holiness, ran and became his disciples. Because virtue, no matter how much it wants to be hidden, is not hidden; it is, as Jesus Christ says, "a city built on a hill"; like a city, which is built on a mountain and can be seen from everywhere. Saint Sisoi was so liberated and independent from material needs, that he often forgot to...

That part about Sisoes heading straight to the exact spot in the Egyptian desert where St Anthony had lived really stuck with me too. He wasn’t just chasing the place, he wanted to copy the virtues. Makes you think how much a good example can pull a person forward, even centuries later.

That detail about Sisoes deliberately going to Anthony’s old spot always gets me too. It wasn’t just geography; he was trying to walk the same path of self-forgetfulness. Have you ever noticed how the article says he even forgot to eat sometimes because he was so free of material needs?

Yeah, that part about him heading straight for Anthony’s old patch in the desert really stuck with me too. It wasn’t just copying the location; he wanted the same radical detachment. I’ve caught myself wondering if I could even skip one meal on purpose without it turning into a big production.

Yeah, that pull to Anthony’s old spot makes sense — it’s like wanting the same quiet that worked for him. I’ve never managed more than a day without food on purpose, but even then I catch myself thinking about supper the whole time. Ever try anything like that on a fishing trip?

Yeah, that pull to Anthony’s old patch really hits home. I’ve tried skipping lunch a few times during garden work and still ended up eyeing the kitchen clock by two o’clock. Ever notice how the mind starts bargaining for just a little snack even when you know it’s only a few hours?
