Today, the Church celebrates the eve of the Nativity of the Theotokos and honors the memory of the Saints Luke and Peter, the Martyrs Eupsychios and Sozontos and the child martyr Sozontos from Asprogia of Paphos. Sozon came from the region of Lycaonia in Asia Minor and lived in the 3rd century AD. He was a pagan shepherd. It is interesting how that shepherd Сώζων immediately after baptism went to a pagan temple and broke a statue. He was not afraid, but simply took and distributed the money to the poor. In our parish, we also recently collected to help the needy, such stories remind us that faith should be concrete.

That part about Sozon going straight into the pagan temple after his baptism and chopping up the gold-and-silver statue really stuck with me. He didn’t just talk about helping the poor; he did it with what was right in front of him. Our own collection last month for the soup kitchen felt a little more real after reading that.
