Prayerful commemoration of the founders and defenders of Samara on the day of the city’s 440th anniversarytranslated

September 2026 marks the 440th anniversary of the city of Samara, founded in 1586 by decree of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich. With the blessing of Metropolitan Theodosius of Samara and Novokuibyshevsk, on Friday, September 11, the memorial program will begin at 12:30 in the Ascension Cathedral. In this oldest surviving church in the city, a memorial service will be held for the founder of Samara, Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich, the first Samara governor, Prince Grigory Zasekin, as well as all the ancient builders and defenders of the fortress. At 13:15, commemorative events will continue on the Volga embankment, where a prayer service will be held in the chapel in honor of St. Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow. We invite residents and guests of the city to take part in the festive services and together honor the memory of the organizers of the Samara region!
