Metropolitan Antonie visited a new church in the Republic of Moldovatranslated

August 5, 2026 · 1 min read

His Eminence Father Antonie, Metropolitan of Bessarabia, visited for the first time the "Saint Arsenius the Great" Church in the city of Cornești, Republic of Moldova.

Metropolitan Antonie appreciated the way in which the new church combines the forms of the Orthodox tradition with a contemporary architectural approach. The church has a neo-Byzantine construction, with sober shapes and harmonious proportions, offering the community a place of prayer adapted to today's pastoral needs.

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia worshiped in the church and prayed for the parish priest, for the founders, for the benefactors and for the community of Cornești.

Also, Metropolitan Antonie held a moment of silence at the grave of father Vladimir Childescu, the one who initiated the church project.

The construction of the new church in Cornești started in 2022. The works were started by father Vladimir Childescu, and after he passed to the Lord, the project was carried forward by father Valentin Childescu.

The new church in Cornești has Saint Arsenius the Great as its patron.

It’s nice to see the new church blending those traditional Orthodox shapes with a cleaner, modern feel—those harmonious proportions sound just right for a smaller town like Cornești. Praying for Fr. Valentin Childescu as he carries on his father’s project after the repose must bring a lot of meaning to the community. May St. Arsenius the Great watch over them.
