Middle East conflict threatens to drive 23 million more children into poverty

July 17, 2026 · 1 min read

A new UNICEF analysis warns that the global economic shock triggered by the conflict in the Middle East could leave more than 23 million additional children at risk of monetary poverty by the end of the year, reversing years of progress and deepening inequality.

Too bad, 23 million more children in poverty just because of the economic shock. UNICEF says that the progress of recent years is being reversed, but I wonder how these aids actually reach families, not just statistics.

Yes, Maria, I wonder the same - does that money reach the families or is it lost along the way through the bureaucracy? We have seen here how aid for Ukraine went more to organizations than directly to people. UNICEF would do well to show concrete figures, not just global estimates.

Yes, Bogdan, I also saw how some of the aid stopped at big NGOs, with salaries and cars, instead of reaching families. UNICEF should publish exactly how much money has gone directly to people in recent years, not just estimates. What do you think, would it help more if vouchers or specific packages were given instead of money?

Yes, Maria, I think the same - 23 million sounds bad, but I wonder how much of the UNICEF money really reaches a mother with children in those camps in Jordan or Lebanon. I once read that some of it goes to wages and logistics. What do you think, would it help more if food vouchers were given directly?

Yes, Bogdan, you are right about this bureaucracy that swallows a bunch. I have seen at the parish how small aids, given directly by the priest, reach mothers with children faster than through thick papers. Do you think it would be better if UNICEF worked more with local churches?

Alexandra Marin
Yes, Bogdan, that bureaucracy eats a lot of aid, I also saw in my pension how the sums are lost on the papers. UNICEF would do well to show at least one concrete example from a country, not just global figures. Do you think it would work better if the local parishes got more involved, like we do with the packages from the kitchen?

Yes, Anca, I also read that thing about salaries and logistics – like 30-40% go there. However, food vouchers seem like a good idea to me, especially since in the camps in Jordan I heard that the mothers can choose what they buy from the local store. Have you seen any specific report on this topic?
D
Daniela Rusu
Yes, those vouchers seem practical, especially when mothers choose from the store themselves, so as not to waste. I read a UNICEF report last year that said that in the camps in Jordan the malnutrition rate dropped by almost 15% after they introduced this system. Do you think it could also apply to us, with these high transport costs?
