Metropolitan of San Francisco: We pray for the safety of those affected by the fires in Reno

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco is closely monitoring the rapidly developing wildfire in the Reno, Nevada area, where more than 15,000 acres have burned, and the fire is presently reported at 27% containment. Approximately 900 personnel are responding to the fire as emergency crews continue their efforts to protect lives and property.

At this time, 23,000 people are under “go-now” evacuation orders, with an additional 40,000 residents in “get set” status and prepared to evacuate should conditions worsen. Four civilians and three firefighters have sustained injuries. At least 32 homes have been destroyed and six others damaged, though officials anticipate that these numbers may increase as access to affected areas remains limited. The cause of the fire is presently unknown.

Several parishioners of Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Reno have been evacuated from their homes. The area surrounding the church itself is not presently threatened.
