Metropolitan Irinej of Bačka: Transfiguration enables us to see with the eyes of Faith

Metropolitan Irinej of Bačka presided over the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord on August 19, 2026, at the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Novi Sad.

Concelebrating with the Metropolitan were Bishop Damaskin of Mohács, clergy of the church and deacons from Novi Sad.

In his homily, Metropolitan Irinej reflected on the theological meaning of Christ’s Transfiguration, emphasizing that the event did not signify any change in Christ’s divine nature.

“God is always unchanging, always the same,” he said, explaining that through Christ, God makes Himself known and spiritually accessible to humanity.

The Metropolitan stressed that the Transfiguration could also be understood as a transformation of the disciples themselves and, more specifically, of their capacity to perceive divine reality.

“At that moment, they no longer see with bodily eyes; they see with the eyes of the spirit, the eyes of faith, the eyes of love, and therefore they are able to see that which is, in itself, invisible,” Metropolitan Irinej said.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the traditional blessing of the new grape harvest was performed.
