Vzpomínka na svaté nežoldnéřské lékaře Kosmy a Damiánapřeloženo

Dnes si Církev připomíná svaté nežoldnéřské lékaře Kosmu a Damiána, mučednice Kyriaini a Julianu a svatého Davida z Euboie.

Lékaři Cosmas a Damian, kteří pocházeli z Asie, ztratili svého otce v raném věku. Jejich matka Theodote jim poskytla jak vynikající vzdělání, tak křesťanskou výchovu.

Vypěstovali si křesťanské ctnosti a pilně se věnovali studiu a praxi medicíny. Svobodně nabízeli své lékařské znalosti, zacházeli s nemocnými s láskou, soucitem a respektem, nikdy nepřijímali platby za své služby. Z tohoto důvodu je církevní hymnografie ctí jako svaté nežoldáky („Anargyroi“), což odráží trvalé uznání věřících.

Svatí získali nehynoucí poklad tím, že svou naději zcela vložili do Boha. Pevně věřili, že „zadarmo jste dostali, zdarma dávejte“, udělovali uzdravení všem, aniž by usilovali o bohatství nebo pozemský majetek. S radostí nadále udělují lidstvu duchovní i fyzická požehnání. Podle církevní tradice také léčili zvířata, čímž prokazovali Boží láskyplnou prozřetelnost a péči o celé stvoření.
