Mother of God Prodromița, testimony of the piety of the Romanian people: Vigil at the Chapel of the National Cathedraltranslated

July 11, 2026 · 1 min read

"The icon of the Mother of God Prodromita is a testimony of the faith and piety of the Romanian people", said the Most Reverend Father Paisie Sinaitul, Patriarchal Vicar Bishop, on Saturday, at the Chapel of the National Cathedral.

"This icon is also a testimony of the Romanian monastic presence at Holy Mount Athos and a testimony of the special Romanian contribution to this center of Orthodox spirituality", added His Eminence, in a statement made to Radio Trinitas.

"The location of the Chapel of the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation under the protection of the Mother of God Prodromita was chosen by the Blessed Father Patriarch Daniel in 2011, considering the connection that exists between our country, Romania, which is often called the Garden of the Mother of God, and the devotion of the Romanians to the Garden of the Mother of God on Athos, for the hesychast spirituality of the Athonite type," the Holy Father also declared Paisie Sinait.

The patriarchal vicar bishop recalled the statement of a Byzantinologist that no other righteous people did as much good for the Holy Mount Athos as the Romanians did.

It is beautiful to see that Patriarch Daniel chose Prodromița precisely because of this link between “Grădina Maicii Domnului” and Mount Athos. The icon always reminds me of the one my grandmother brought back from a Romanian pilgrimage; it was lit in the evening during Lent. Thank you for this concrete reminder.

Yes, here in Burgas we also had a copy of Prodromița at an evening service years ago. The patriarch chose well in 2011, the connection with Aton is still alive today. What parish are you from, Emile?

Yes, I have also seen such a small copy in our church in Varna during Lent, years ago - people came especially to pray. It is good that the Patriarch chose her in 2011, the connection with Aton is really felt. And what parish were you in, Emile?

Yes, I have also heard that in Varna they carried a spear during fasting - people really flocked. The election of the Patriarch in 2011 seems very accurate to me, especially considering how many Romanians have helped Athos. And in which church in Varna did you see it exactly, Kirill?
