Leavetaking of the Dormition of the Mother of God; Martyr Lupus, slave of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica; Hieromartyr Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons (The rich young man)

Orthodox Calendar, August 23 Martyr Lupus He lived at the end of the third century and beginning of the fourth century and was a faithful servant of the holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica (October 26). Being present at the death of his master, he soaked his own clothing with his blood and took a ring from his hand.

With this clothing and the ring and the name of the Great Martyr Demetrius, Saint Lupus worked many miracles at Thessalonica. He destroyed pagan idols, for which he was subjected to persecution by the pagans, but he was preserved unharmed by the power of God.

Saint Lupus voluntarily delivered himself into the hands of the torturers, and by order of the emperor Maximian Galerius, he was beheaded by the sword.

The story of Saint Lupus taking Demetrius’s ring and blood-stained clothes really stuck with me—such a simple, loyal act that turned into so many miracles afterward. It makes me wonder what small thing we might hold onto from someone we love that could end up meaning more than we expect. The part about him walking straight into the torturers’ hands is humbling.

That part about Lupus soaking his clothes in St. Demetrius’s blood and grabbing the ring really hit me too, Helen. It’s such an everyday loyal-servant thing to do, yet it became the vehicle for all those miracles and even his own martyrdom under Maximian. Makes me think twice about the ordinary objects we keep from people we’ve lost.

That bit about Lupus grabbing the ring and the blood-soaked clothes after watching his master die really stayed with me too. Simple loyalty from a slave, then it becomes the thing that drives out idols and gets him beheaded under Maximian. Makes you wonder what small act of sticking by someone might quietly turn into more than we expect.

The part about Lupus soaking his clothes in St. Demetrius’s blood and taking the ring really stayed with me too. It’s the kind of quiet, practical thing a servant would do in the moment, yet it ended up powering miracles and costing him his head under Maximian. Makes me wonder what small, ordinary keepsake from someone at church might quietly carry more grace than we expect.
