Leadership of WCC Commission on Ecumenical Education and Formation looks forward with vision and commitment

Rev. Dr Meehyun Chung, moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission on Ecumenical Education and Formation (EEF), and Rev. Dr Teddy Chalwe Sakupapa, vice-moderator, visited the WCC offices in Geneva this week focusing on ongoing projects and upcoming initiatives of the c ommission.

During their visit to Geneva, Chung and Sakupapa met with the WCC general secretary and members of the WCC staff. They were also welcomed at the WCC ’ s Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, which will host a meeting of the EEF Commission in October. It is nice that they are meeting in Bossey and at the same time commemorating the 80 years of that institute. I visited Bossey years ago on a summer course and I still remember how much the place affects a person. I am looking forward to what will come out of the October meeting for our theological education.

I'm glad they're going to celebrate Bossey's 80th anniversary. As a nurse, I often see how important it is to have a solid foundation, and this place clearly gives it to many future priests and teachers. I wonder what exactly they will decide about theological education in October.

Glad you chose Bossey for the October meeting. I attended a training course there fifteen years ago and have benefited to this day from the conversations we had on the terrace in the evenings. I'm curious to see what they decide specifically about theological training.

I’m glad that Bosse is being remembered again - I attended a week-long seminar on liturgics there in 2008, and I still have a bookmark from that course in my prayer book. It’s good that they will celebrate 80 years in October, the place really shapes people. I wonder what exactly they will decide about the training of new teachers.

I’m glad that Bosse is remembered again and the institute’s 80th anniversary is celebrated. Here in Novosibirsk, after such courses, the guys then share for years how they discussed the liturgy on the terrace in the evenings - it definitely shapes it. I wonder what exactly they will decide on theological education in October.

I am delighted that Bossey will be hosting this October EEF committee meeting. I remember how my son, after returning from a similar course in 2022, quoted evening conversations from the terrace for half a year. I wonder what exactly they will decide regarding theological education.

I’m glad for you, Ivan, that the seminar on liturgics in Bosse was so memorable - I also have a couple of bookmarks in my prayer book from there. I wonder if in October they will talk about how to now train teachers specifically for our Russian seminaries, and not just for general ecumenical programs. What do you think, is it worth sending our young clergy there more often?

Ilya, I also remember about the seminar in Bosse - they gave really good books on liturgics there. But I’m not sure about sending young clerics often. We don’t have enough teachers in Krasnodar, it’s better to strengthen their positions here, otherwise they will return with general ideas, but they don’t know local realities. Would you go now?

I'm glad you see the connection to the foundation too, Ivanka - as a hospital nurse myself, I see every day how much one builds on what one learned early on. I wonder if at this meeting in Bossey in October they will also talk about the practical training of priests, not only about theory.

I’m glad, Ivan, that the seminar on liturgics in Bosse is still being reviewed - after my trip there in 2015, I also had a note with the chants, and sometimes I re-read it. But regarding the new teachers, I wonder whether they will talk about the experience of parish teachers, like we train in Yaroslavl. What do you think, is it worth paying more attention to church songs in preparation?

Yes, Bosse really will be remembered for a long time. We have one guy in Tula who, after such courses, then taught the entire parish for a year how to read the Apostle correctly. I wonder what exactly from the October program seems most important to you for our seminaries?

I’m glad, Ivan, that the bookmark from Bosse is still in the prayer book - after the course on icon painting in 2012, I also have one, it helps during Lent. But for the new teachers, I wonder if they will talk about how important it is for teachers themselves to first stand deeply in church life, and not just master methods. What do you think?

Svetlana, I also still have a bookmark from Bosse in my prayer book - my wife brought it in 2015 after their seminar. I completely agree that teachers themselves must first stand firmly in church life, otherwise all methods are empty. Did you take an icon painting course in 2012 in Bosse or somewhere else?

Yes, Sergey, I also attended a course in icon painting at Bosse in 2012, those bookmarks are still in the prayer book. I completely agree with you about teachers - if they themselves are not firmly rooted in church life, then no methods will help. Do you often re-read those materials from 2015?
