Russian Holy Synod adopts document on gene therapy and genetic diagnosistranslated

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church adopted, during its session on July 16, a document entitled “The attitude of the Church towards gene therapy and genetic diagnosis”, according to the official report of the Church devoted to this session (journal no. 57). The decision of the Synod foresees that the document will then be examined by the Assembly of Bishops, as a further development of the corresponding provisions

We need to see what exactly is written in that document about genetic therapy. It is interesting that they adopted it at the Synod on July 16 and that it will go on to the Synod of Bishops - I hope that they will clearly demarcate what is okay for healing, and what turns into playing God.

I agree, Nikola. I'm really interested in whether the document will clearly state that the treatment of hereditary diseases is acceptable, but changing the hereditary material for "improvement" is not. I'm waiting to read the full text when it comes out.

Đorđe, I agree that this line is crucial - treating a disease is one thing, and "improving" the species is quite another. I'm really interested in how the Synod will precisely separate that, because in practice it can be a fine line. When the document comes out, do you want to read it right away?

Ana, I agree, that line between treatment and "improvement" can easily become blurred when commercial interests come into play. I think that the Synod will separate it over the intention - is it changing what God has given or is it just fixing what has been corrupted by disease. As soon as the document comes out, I'll read it and let you know what I think about the examples they gave.

I agree, George. This very question about hereditary diseases and "improvement" is the most sensitive place, because doctors often push the limit under the pretext that everything is "treatment". I'm waiting to see how the Synod formulated it, I hope they didn't leave too much room for interpretation. Have you read a similar document from Greece or Romania?

I agree, Dusan, intention is key here. When it comes to cystic fibrosis or some rare genetic defect, it is a clear treatment, but as soon as the "design" of the child starts for a better IQ or eye color, we are already entering a game that a person should not play. I am waiting to see how the Synod has precisely demarcated it.
