When addiction becomes a problem: talking about helping a persontranslated

July 23, 2026 · 1 min read

With the blessing of His Eminence Stefan, Archbishop of Gomel and Zhlobin, the coordinator for work with alcohol and drug addicts of the Gomel diocese, Priest Alexander Grishanenko, clergyman of the parish of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon in Gomel, took part in the radio program “Key of Understanding” on July 22, 2026.

Together with narcologist Igor Olegovich Lukhanin, head of the dispensary department of the Gomel Regional Drug Dispensary, a wide range of issues related to alcohol consumption were covered. “Rus' has joy to drink, we cannot exist without it,” - this is what, according to the chronicle, the Kiev prince Vladimir, in the future - Equal-to-the-Apostles, said shortly before his baptism. So is alcohol an unambiguous evil, and its use in itself a sinful act? How acute is the problem of alcoholism in our society, and what causes it? Is it possible for medicine and the Church to cooperate in solving this problem? How to form the right attitude towards alcohol in children? Each participant provided comments, found answers in the dialogue, and gave advice to those suffering. You can find a recording of the program on the website of the Gomel television and radio company.
