The blessed Prince Daniel was born in 1261 and was the youngest son of Saint Alexander Nevsky. After the death of his father, during the division of the inheritance, he received Moscow, then still a small princely inheritance. Having become a prince, he sought to avoid internecine bloodshed and reconcile warring relatives. Moreover, his reign took place in the usual political struggle of the 13th century. The foundation of the Danilov Monastery in Moscow, dedicated to his heavenly patron, the Venerable Daniel the Stylite, is associated with the name of the prince. The prince died in 1303. Before his death, he became a monk.
