Knights of Columbus welcomes more than 2,000 members to 144th Supreme Convention in Denver

Thousands of Knights from across the globe gathered for the Knights of Columbus’ 144th Supreme Convention focused on the theme “In the One, We Are One,” with an emphasis on the virtues of unity and charity.

The Catholic fraternal organizationʼs annual convention is being held Aug. 4–6 in Denver. It includes Masses, prayer services, an awards session recognizing member and council achievements, and a summary of the organizationʼs annual report.

The event, focused on the order’s principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, opened with Mass celebrated by Archbishop James Golka of Denver along with dozens of bishops, hundreds of priests and deacons, and thousands of Knights and families.

In his homily, Golka shared his personal relationship with the Knights, as he is a fourth-degree Knight, his six brothers are Knights, and his late father was a Knight. In 2021, the year Golka was named bishop of Colorado Springs, his family was named Family of the Year by the Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council.

“The Knights of Columbus exists to help our men grow in their faith, and they sure did for my dad,” Golka said.

How good that Archbishop Golka told about his father and his six brothers. It shows that the Knights really accompany real families, not just at masses. I wish in our parish we could have something similar for parents.

Yes, the story of Archbishop Golka with his father and six brothers is very down-to-earth and convincing. It can be seen that the Knights are not just about parades and prayers, they really keep men and their families together for years. Here in Sofia, we don't have exactly such a brotherhood for fathers, but maybe we should think about something similar.

Yes, the story with the father and the six brothers really sounds like something that happens in real life, not just on paper. We don't have such a male Catholic brotherhood here in Burgas either, but in our parish choir the men often get involved with the women and children to clean the church or for the holidays - it keeps us together. Do you think that in Sofia they could start with something small, like weekly meetings for fathers?

Yes, the story of Archbishop Golka with his father and six brothers is a pure sample of real life. At our church in Varna, the men also gather sometimes after the Sunday liturgy, but we are not organized like the Knights - we talk more about fishing and football than about faith. Maybe we can take an example and do something similar for fathers.
