KEY ELECTIONS IN GERMANY: FAR RIGHT IS FAVORITE IN SAXONYtranslated

Voters in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt will vote today in elections for a local parliament, according to forecasts, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) may win power for the first time, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The latest polls give the AzG around and above 40%, or 15 to 20 points, ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU, which governs the province together with the Social Democrats and the liberal Free Democrats.

Such a result will allow AzG to bypass the so-called "bulwark" of systemic parties against cooperation with the extreme right, launching it and its leading candidate Ulrich Sigmund into government.

Whether the AzG will secure a full majority will most likely depend on whether the three left-wing parties - the "Left", the German Social Democratic Party (GSDP) and the "Greens" - will pass the 5 percent barrier to obtain parliamentary seats.

The AzG's leading position in the surveys is maintained even as its branch in Saxony-Anhalt is under surveillance by the intelligence services because of its "confirmed extremist views".
