September 2, 2026 · 1 min read

The “Burning Bush” Icon of the Mother of God will be celebrated this week at the Antim Monastery in Bucharest, for the first time since its enrollment in the calendar of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The liturgical program will begin on Thursday, at 17:00, with a procession around the church of the monastic settlement, during which the icon will be worn. The procession will be followed by the Vigil service. On Friday, starting at 08:00, the Akathist of the Icon of the Mother of God "The Burning Bush", the Hours and the Holy Liturgy will be celebrated. The representation of the Mother of God "The Burning Bush" was included in the calendar of the Romanian Orthodox Church by the decision of the Holy Synod of July 2. The date of honor was established on September 4, when the Church also commemorates the Holy Prophet Moses, to whom the biblical account of the bush that burned without being consumed is linked. The icon from Antim Monastery was brought from Russia by a group of monks who retreated to the Holy Mount Athos at the beginning of the 20th century.

It's good that they connected the holiday of September 4, together with Moses and the pyre that burned without being consumed. The icon brought by those monks from Russia to Athos at the beginning of the last century really fits the history of the Antim monastery and the "Burning Rosary" movement. I'll see if I can get to the Akathist on Friday morning.
