Greek PM to meet Egyptian President as Sinai Monastery issue remains on agenda

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will travel to Egypt on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, where he is expected to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with the status of Saint Catherine’s Monastery at Mount Sinai among the issues expected to be discussed.

Speaking at a press conference during the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of Greek-Egyptian relations and referred to his upcoming meeting with the Egyptian President.

“We have a strategic relationship with Egypt, which I will have the opportunity to reaffirm during the visit I will make next Tuesday to President Sisi,” the Prime Minister said, describing bilateral relations as geopolitical, military and energy-related.

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis also addressed the Sinai Monastery issue while in Thessaloniki. Speaking at the OT Forum, he said that Egypt is a country of particular diplomatic importance to Greece and noted that he remains in regular contact with his Egyptian counterpart.

Let's hope that this "preliminary agreement" that Gerapetritis says will move forward quickly. The monastery of Agia Ekaterini is a Greek treasure of centuries and cannot be delayed further. We will see what comes out of the Mitsotakis-Sisi meeting on Tuesday.

I hope we don't just stick to the "preliminary agreement" of Gerapetritis. The monastery of Agia Ekaterini has centuries-old Greek roots and it is a shame that it remains pending for so many years. We will see what Mitsotakis will say to Sisi on Tuesday, but something tangible had better come out.

I hope that this “preliminary agreement” by Gerapetritis will finally turn into real papers. The Monastery of St. Catherine is the place where our monks served for centuries, and it would be right for its status to be consolidated without further delays. Let's see what Mitsotakis says to Sisi on Tuesday.
