Greek PM: President of North Macedonia’s decision was an unlawful and unacceptable action

May 13, 2024 · 1 min read

“The recent decision of the new President of North Macedonia to deviate from the official text of her oath and refer to her country by an alternate name is deemed as an unlawful and unacceptable action. This move blatantly contravenes both the Prespa Agreement and the North Macedonian Constitution, thereby jeopardizing the nation’s integrity and future,” stated Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a Facebook post.

Highlighting Greece’s adherence to international treaties, Mitsotakis emphasized New Democracy’s opposition to the 2019 Agreement but upheld the country’s commitment to its signature upon assuming government responsibility. “Regrettably, recent events vindicate our initial concerns,” he added.

Expressing Greece’s rejection of such manipulative actions, Mitsotakis urged the new President to uphold her legal obligations and exhibit behavior befitting her role. He reiterated Greece’s firm stance against any regression and reaffirmed that bilateral relations and North Macedonia’s European aspirations hinge upon sincere adherence to agreements and the correct use of its constitutional name, urging the avoidance of provocations.
