This is just heartbreaking. A music director in a position of trust, and the pastor missing clear red flags while pushing the girl to recant? That kind of cover-up makes it so much harder for victims to come forward. Churches need to do better at protecting kids instead of protecting their own reputation.

This is really sad this story. The pastor who pressures the girl to retract instead of listening to the obvious signs, this shows that child protection comes after the church's reputation. Parishes should better train their leaders and report immediately to the police, not handle it internally.

This is a terrible story. A music director who worked with children does this kind of thing, and a priest forces a girl to deny everything—that's exactly what drives people away from the church. Even in our Paris we have to be more careful who we let near children.

I agree, the pressure to recant sounds especially damaging. Our own parish requires two adults present with any child during music practice now, after we saw similar blind spots years ago. Have you seen any diocese guidelines that actually work?
