The film "Fjord" will represent Romania at the 2027 Oscar Awardstranslated

The film "Fjord", written and directed by Cristian Mungiu, will represent Romania at the 2027 Oscar Awards, in the "Best International Feature Film" category.

The decision was taken unanimously by the National Cinematography Center (CNC), according to a press release sent by the institution.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or for best film. In Romania, the film had a one-day preview in all cinemas in the country.

Possible Best Picture nomination "Fjord" is also on the American publication Variety's list of films that could have a big run in the film awards season.

In the predictions published at the end of August, the American magazine includes the Romanian film among the ten productions that could be nominated in the "Best Film" category. Cristian Mungiu is also among the possible nominees in the "Original Screenplay" category.

Hope it does well for us. Mungiu’s films always feel very Romanian, even when they’re set somewhere cold like a fjord. Interesting they’re already talking about a possible nod for best picture too.

Mungiu iar a luat Palme d’Or, bravo lui. Mă bucur că au ales „Fjord” în unanimitate la CNC, dar mă întreb cum o fi arătând un film românesc cu un titlu nordic. O să încerc să-l văd la cinema, dacă mai rulează o zi ca avanpremieră.

Mungiu won the Palme d'Or again, so it's no wonder that they chose him unanimously at the CNC. The title "Fjord" sounds strange for a Romanian film, but Elizabeth is right - you always feel that local flavor even in a northern landscape. Mungiu really did a great job with that "Palm Branch", but it's interesting that it was in "Fjord" that he came up with such a Norwegian.
