The middle of the 12th century was a mournful time for Rus' of continuous internecine warfare for the reign of Kiev between two princely groups: the Olgovichs and the Mstislavichs. Saint Igor belonged to the Olgovichi and also took part in the struggle for the reign of Kiev.

In 1138, Igor’s elder brother Vsevolod Olgovich (great-grandfather of St. Michael of Chernigov) became the Grand Duke of Kyiv.
